background

In the Indians, Kingstown Bay was called "Oashegunny." The small town is often confused with the capital Kingston of Jamaica. Kingstown is located on a narrow, flat strip of land and on the slopes of the two hills Mount St. Andrew and Dorsetshire Hill. Three roads run parallel to the port, forming the backbone of the village. The town is characterized by the many small towers of the Catholic Church. In 1970 the land area was expanded to the port, a container terminal was created and a new feeder was built for cruise ships. The Cruise Ship Terminal now has modern terminals with souvenirs, restaurants and bars. The quay installations can be equipped with two vessels at the same time, and can be 100 and 260 meters long. The car park is equipped with 50 minibuses and a taxi.

The ferries to the southern Grenadines islands have their own feeder. There, four ships can dock at once. The air-conditioned terminal has a 50-person waiting room in the basement, a bar, a cafeteria and 28 boxes for short-term luggage storage. The Teach Restaurant and Bar is located on the top floor. All the facilities are open daily from 7:00am to 7:00pm. The parking is supervised 24 hours a day.

The Kingstown area includes the parts of Edinboro and New Montrose on the north-west side of the bay, Old Montrose with the Botanical Gardens in the north. In the north-east, the districts of Liberty Lodge, Kingstown Park, Murray, Rockies and Richmond Hill are rising up the hills. In the southeast you will find the district of Sion Hill as far as the airfield and on the south side of the harbor, follow Cane Garden, Roseau and Mallah.

sights

  • St. Mary's Cathedral. The Roman Catholic cathedral was built in 1823 from black volcanic stone. Since they were expanded in 1877 and 1891, there are different styles. In the early 1940s the church was renovated under the guidance of the Belgian Benedictine monk, Dom Charles Verbeke. last amendment: no
  • St. George´s Anglican Cathedral. This church is the seat of the bishop for the Windward Islands. At the end of the 1720s a first church was built in the same place. It was destroyed by a cyclone in 1780. It was only in 1820 that two thirds of today's building was built together with the tower. Between 1880 and 1887, the aileron and the cardboard was added. The inner gallery is Georgian architecture. Some memorial plaques are important, some of which have been inserted into the bottom of the main ship. The east and south sides are equipped with stained-glass windows, originally commissioned by Queen Victoria for the St. Paul's Cathedral in London. This is the oldest church on the island. last amendment: no
  • Kingstown Methodistenkirche. Kingstown Methodistenkirche was completed on 1 August 1841 after five years of construction under the direction of John Cullingford. The organ with its complicated construction is particularly important. The colorful windows and the colored interior are also important. last amendment: no
  • Archeological Museum, in the Botanical Gardens. Ceramics, a Polynesian war canoe and stone tools are in the exhibition of the Archeological Museum. Opened: Mi 9.00 - 12.00 + Sat 14.00 - 18.00 Price: Entry 2 EC $. last amendment: no
  • Botanical Garden, Leeward Highway, Ministry of Agriculture, Industry & Labor, Kingstown. Tel: 457-1003. This 5 hectare garden was founded in 1762 by the then island governor General Melville. It is the oldest botanical garden in the western world. From 1787 to 1788, Captain William Bligh made his first trip to Tahiti, which ended with the mutiny on the Bounty. After his successful second trip, he threw anchor in the port of Kingstown in 1793. The garden's director, Sir Alex Anderson, succeeded in growing the seedlings with a lot of emotion. In 1884 a great effort was made to revive the garden. Until 1890, the plant was integrated into plans for a larger agricultural-botanical project. A West Indian Commission was set up in 1890-1891 and supervised the development of several experimental sites for the introduction of new crops on the island. The botanical garden was then extended to 3 hectares. In 1940 William Sands became the first superintendent in agriculture. He was in charge of the Agricultural School, testing stations, agricultural development projects and cotton spinning. He also found time for the Botanical Gardens, which reached its current size until 1944. The test station was then moved to Camden Park. Today, one of the few specimens of the National Tree, the Soufriere Tree, Spachea perforata, is found in the Botanical Garden, which has not been wild since 1812. In the recent past, it has planted large numbers of conifers, Italian cypresses and pine trees. last amendment: no Type is group
  • Government House, at the northern end of the Botanical Gardens. Tel: 456-1401, Fax: 457-9710. The governors of Saint Vincent lived in different houses over the centuries. In 1791, the Government House was located somewhere in the Calliaqua area. During the Second Carib War between 1795 and 1797, the governor and his staff fled to Forte Charlotte. At that time, the Government House was in Montrose. The abandoned house deteriorated after the Carib war. A new building was built in Kingstown, where the Barclalys Bank was located. Today, First Caribbean International Bank is located on Halifax Street. This new building gave the governor easy access to the offices in a nearby building. In 1828 another Government House was built on a 3 hectare plot in the Botanical Gardens. This house, too, fell soon. The current Government House was probably built on the same site in 1886. It has a three-sided saddle roof. The walls of the basement are made of stone and the upper floor is made of wood. The entrance to the upper floor is via the external masonry staircase. Guided tours of 30 minutes cost 2 US $, longer tours 3 US $. last amendment: no Type is group
  • Dr. Cecil Cyrus Museum, New Montrose. Tel: 457-9781, Fax: 457-0812. This museum was set up in the former Botanic Clinic in New Montrose. It is probably unique for the entire Caribbean. The operating room was preserved in its original form. There's a big picture exhibition. Medical samples are displayed in over 1,000 different glass containers and bottles. Opened: Mon - Fri 9.30 - 17.00, Sat 9.00 - 13.00. last amendment: no
  • Fort Charlotte. Fort Charlotte, after the wife of King George III. was built in the years 1796 to 1806, after there had been a fortification there since 1791. It is located on the west side of the bay, on a hill, about 200 meters above Kingstown. It was originally equipped with 34 cannons and occupied by 600 soldiers until 1854. Because they feared attacks from both the water side and the Carib Indians from the land side, the cannons point in both directions. In 1856, parts of the plant were damaged by a fire. From 1867 to 1873 the Royal Artillery was stationed there, which also destroyed the damage of the fire. In 1872 several cannons were sold as a result of high prices for iron. In the following years, a coastguard signal tower was built there and parts of the fort were converted into a female prison. There is still a gallows, as the death penalty has not yet been abolished on the island. Since the 1960s, the complex has been partially open to the public. It has been restored with EU and Caribbean Development Bank funding. In the old warehouses, a museum has been set up on the history of the Black Caribs. Opened: daily from 6:00 to 18:00. last amendment: no Type is group
